Who are we looking for?
De Nieuwe Wandeling. The name sounds almost relaxing — a pleasant stroll perhaps, somewhere along the Leie. The reality is a little different: it is one of the best-known prisons in Ghent, and we are looking for a nurse who is happy to walk in. Literally, because you won’t get far without a key.
You are someone who loves variety and challenge. You don’t want to see the same thing every day, drive the same round, work in the same context. You are strong in communication, keep your calm in unexpected situations and know that good care knows no judgement — whether it concerns a home patient in Wondelgem or an inmate in De Nieuwe Wandeling.
- You are a qualified nurse and work, or want to work, as a self-employed professional
- You love variety and want to practise your profession in two unique settings
- You are a strong communicator, resilient under stress and non-judgmental in your care
- You want to set your own working rhythm, in consultation with the scheduling structure of both work environments
- You are professional, discreet and know how to handle complex human situations
- Experience in home nursing and/or forensic or judicial care is a plus
What will you be doing?
As an independent nurse with one of our partners, you combine two worlds that seem to have little in common at first glance — but both revolve around the same thing: quality, people-centred care at the moment someone needs it.
In Ghent home care:
- You provide nursing care in patients’ homes throughout the Ghent area: wound care, medication management, injections, tube feeding and more
- You build a relationship of trust with your regular patients and the people around them
- You work with GPs and care partners and report through the digital platform
In De Nieuwe Wandeling:
- You provide medical and nursing care to inmates: wound care, medication administration, triage and follow-up of chronic conditions
- You work with the prison’s medical team and refer on to external care providers where necessary
- You deal professionally and without prejudice with a special and diverse patient population
What you don’t do: let the name ‘Nieuwe Wandeling’ fool you. It is not a park. But it is one of the most fascinating places you can work as a nurse.

Supplies for both work environments
For your home care activity, we supply the necessary medical materials centrally. In De Nieuwe Wandeling you work with the resources of the medical service. You are never short of hands.
Training that strengthens both worlds
You have free access to practice-oriented training — both for home nursing and for care in a judicial setting. Because behind the walls too, you keep growing as a professional.
